Haunted Library Escape Room In-Person
Cordelia Elizabeth Mae Clockwood tragically lost her life at the library on this very day, 50 years ago. On a dark and stormy night, working alone she saw a misfiled book at top of a shelf and climbed to the top to retrieve it. Unfortunately, just as the book was within their grasp, the shelf tipped and she was crushed by the combined weight of the shelf and books.
Unable to clock out, her spirit returns every year to the Plainedge Library to exact revenge on the patrons who wronged her. Or worse, returned books with dog-eared pages! Before you join Cordelia in the afterlife, you have 45 minutes to correctly arrange the books back on the shelf.
As a volunteer working at the library, you have been asked to come in and assist the library staff by cleaning up the local history room. You’ve heard of terrible accidents in the past or when others have gone missing… but surely, those are just rumors. Your task is to make sure that the books have been placed back on the shelf in order in 45 minutes.
The 45 minute timer starts when you open the chest. Good luck! Cordelia is watching…
This October during the week of the 6th, the Plainedge Public Library is having its first-ever escape room! Whether it's your first time doing an escape room or if you are a seasoned expert, we hope you will attend and have a great experience. It has been designed with six people in mind and you will have 45 minutes to put eight books back in Dewey Decimal System order.
We ask that at least one adult (18+) be in the room. A group of children will need an adult with them for this program. Parents and guardians are responsible for the behavior and supervision of their children while in the Plainedge Public Library, or on Library property. Library staff will not be responsible for children who have been left without supervision.
Some helpful hints:
If you are stuck or need a nudge in the right direction, you can ask for three clues to help you. Confirm with your group and ask for a suggestion as you put the books back in Dewey Decimal Order.
For this purpose, the Dewey Decimal System has been reduced to just the first three digits. The system itself is used to help librarians and patrons alike by categorizing books by their subject matter using numbers. For instance, a book on Latin and related Italic languages would be in the 470s.
If you see something tagged with a red piece of tape, this is not part of the escape room and can be safely ignored. In general, if something is heavy or not meant to be moved, it is not part of the game. Please do not try to force anything to open, you may damage something and/or ruin your fun.
Please fill out the form linked below by Monday, September 29th so we can give your group your time slot as we try our best to fit in as many people participate as we can.
